Purpose in Paradise
When most people think of Bali, they envision a curated aesthetic of luxury. They picture private villas with infinity pools overlooking terraced rice paddies, expensive yoga retreats, and sunset cocktails on the beaches of Seminyak. The island has become a global symbol of paradise, drawing millions of visitors each year who come to consume its beauty and its peace. But there is a sharp, invisible line separating the Bali experienced by tourists from the Bali lived by its most vulnerable residents. Behind the glossy facade of the tourism industry, thousands of families in the remote northern and eastern villages live in profound poverty, struggling without reliable access to clean water, basic healthcare, or education.
This contrast is the reason She Dares to Wander, in partnership with LOTUS Humanitarian, approaches travel differently. We do not believe in passing through a destination simply to take from it. We believe that true travel requires participation, and that the privilege of witnessing the beauty of a place comes with the responsibility of acknowledging its suffering. This August, we are returning to the island with She Dares to Wander for a journey that intentionally steps off the beaten path and into the heart of the community. We are currently fundraising to support the specific projects and people we will be working alongside during our time there.
Our work begins with the children. We will be spending time at the Bali Baby Home, an organization that provides shelter, education, and complete care for abandoned infants and children from underprivileged families. Many of these children are the invisible casualties of systemic poverty, born to parents who lost their livelihoods in the tourism sector and simply cannot afford to feed them. The foundation works tirelessly to keep families together where possible, and to provide a safe, nurturing environment when reunification is not an option. We are bringing suitcases filled with donated supplies from home, but more importantly, we are bringing our presence and our willingness to understand the daily realities these caretakers face.
From there, our focus expands to the broader community through the Bali Family Foundation. This organization operates in the remote villages where the wealth of the southern tourist hubs has never reached. They provide monthly food parcels to families facing extreme food insecurity and fund school fees and uniforms so that children are not forced to abandon their education to beg on the streets. During our trip, we will spend an afternoon with the children of these villages, organizing a field day of games and shared joy. It is a simple act of connection, but it bridges the gap between the world we come from and the reality they inhabit.

Finally, our commitment to relieving suffering extends to the animals who struggle to survive on the island. Bali has a massive population of street dogs facing hunger, illness, and mistreatment. We are partnering with the Bali Animal Welfare Association, an organization that provides emergency rescue, rehabilitation, and hundreds of thousands of meals annually to animals in need. Our group will spend time volunteering at the rescue, walking the dogs and providing the socialization they need to eventually find permanent homes.

Transformational travel is not found in a five-star hotel room. It is found in the tender cries of a baby orphanage, in the laughter of children playing in a remote village, and in the steady, rhythmic walking of a rescued dog. It is found when we choose to look past the paradise we were sold and engage with the reality that actually exists. If you feel called to support this work, our fundraising efforts for this trip are actively underway. Every contribution goes directly toward the supplies, the food, and the care that these specific organizations provide. We travel to witness, we travel to connect, and we travel to leave the places we visit a little more whole than we found them.
